SANITARY PADS:WINGS FOR GIRLS
Nothing makes sense without a wing. Regardless of it being a pad, an eyeliner or a dream! Sanitary pad is a thin pad which is made up of absorbent material that absorbs the menstrual fluid during menstruation. They are generally wrapped as such so that they are easier to carry in a purse or bag. It is the most widely used method for menstrual management.
Before we proceed to go about their use, do you know how were they like fifty years ago?
In past before the invention of disposable pads, most women used rags, cotton or sheep’s wool to stem the flow of blood. Knitted pads, rabbit fur, and even grass was used by all women to handle their periods. Even though sanitary pads were available before, but they were quite expensive to be purchased at that time. Therefore, they continued using the old methods only. And afterwards when it became affordable, women were allowed to place the money in the box and they would not speak to the shopkeeper and pick the box of pads from the counter itself. It took a long time for disposable sanitary pads to become a commonplace household item.
Over the last twenty years, the sanitary pads industry has advanced by leaps and bounds. Sanitary pads have become more comfortable and practical than ever before, with the invention of more absorbent materials and better designs. The invention of ‘wings’ keeps pads at the right place and the invention of ‘scented pads’ reduces odor. When for the first time women get periods, they use a regular sized napkin. And when the regular size seems to be filling up too fast, then they go for long-sized pad.
The song from the heart of every girl be like- We live in a country where cigarettes are sold in so fantastic way, but pads are wrapped in only black plastic. We live in a society where media shows a single pad can absorb all the water of a pool , but showcasing the different types of misconceptions doesn’t look cool. Even many women still use old clothes instead of sanitary pads, and we require serious awareness about the menstrual hygiene.
Sanitary pads are the most widely used form of menstrual management, but still they are overpriced, especially in the developing countries. Women still whispers that she can’t stay free, she cannot already afford the pain. But now she has to pay GST. You can see that it is as necessary as salt.
Pads should not be a choice, it should be a right for girls to buy at right place, at right time and at right price.
